Building 335 houses across 5 provinces

Each year, Habitat for Humanity SA, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, celebrates the life and legacy of Mandela by building homes for vulnerable families during the month of July. 

​In our quest to provide decent housing to the community’s resource-deprived members, we are taking advantage of this year’s Nelson Mandela Day to massively expand our build program.

Celebrating South Africa’s 30 years of democracy

We will launch a lifelong legacy project of building 335 houses and one social amenity per annum in perpetuity for the Nelson Mandela Build starting from FY25.

An ambitious new target

This year’s program has been upscaled to build 67 houses in 5 out of 9 provinces, namely, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, Free State and the Northwest. We are building a lifelong legacy of reducing housing poverty for the most deserving families in the communities.

A transformational experience

Our Build Program is a pivotal mechanism for implementing our mission. It plays a crucial role as an entry point for volunteers from various backgrounds to participate in a transformational experience of building homeswith low-income beneficiaries and the broader community.

Annually, in July, HFH SA invites volunteers to build in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation as its shelter implementation agent.

We also partner with the national, provincial, and local government departments of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation to support the sustainable rollout of their housing delivery program.

For media and advocacy, we have a standing partnership with the SABC Foundation through which we leverage the broadcasters’ corporate social responsibility programs.

We support the most vulnerable members of the community with:

  • Provision of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions, especially in schools;
  • Skills training and enterprise development in the communities which they operate;
  • Advocacy for change in policies, systems and processes that impede access to housing for the low-income earners.
