Although Habitat SA believe that the journey out of poverty starts with a decent home, the solution is multi-dimensional. Through living their purpose of ‘to use our financial expertise to do good for individuals, families, businesses and society’, we commend Nedbank Home Loans on how they continue to engage ‘beyond the build’ to assist and improve the livelihoods of the communities in which they have built.
In April 2019, we shared photographs of the veggie tunnel that Nedbank built for Lawley Primary School, South of Johannesburg. Recently, they returned to visit the school and were happy to see how well the garden has been maintained. The teachers have manage to use the vegetables to not only teach the children to grow their own veggies, but has also assisted with feeding the students. Seeds grown from the tunnel were used to start an additional area where more vegetables can be planted.
Earlier in the year the team also gave a hand up to Pheasant Folly Primary School in Palm Ridge where they have resourced the teachers with chalkboards, assisted with contributing to school lunches, donated sanitary ware and lunch bowls/plates and provided educational talks on working wisely with money, as well as facilitating fun reading and dance activities. Nedbank donated benches and bins to the school which have provided a comfortable, dignified space for the students to sit at break and have their lunch.
Nedbank has continued their partnership with Pheasant Folly Primary School this month when the Home Loans team hosted the school’s top achievers and prefects from Gr 6 and 7 in the Nedbank Auditorium. Various Nedbank Executives and Managers addressed the students after which they were treated to lunch on the deck. The experience was reportedly a huge highlight for these students and has inspired them to continue to work hard in school.
Thank you to the incredible team at Nedbank Home Loans who continue to pour their hearts into these initiatives – through identifying the needs and developing the solutions together with the schools, you are building on thriving school-communities – the effects of your efforts will be generational as these children grow into our future leaders and money-makers! May God bless these relationships and the work of your hands.
