This Christmas, you can give the gift of a decent home to an elderly person who has never known the comfort of four walls and a roof over their head.
A decent home provides a safe haven for vulnerable elderly people.
133 000 of our most vulnerable; South Africans over 60+ years live in informal shelter. Stats SA, 2017
Sub-Saharan Africa has the fastest growing elderly population and as informal settlements increase in density, so does the scale of poverty housing.
As we age, our increased fragility necessitates an environment that is conducive to safe, comfortable and healthy living. Our ability to be resilient against challenging environmental and other factors decreases and we become more dependent on others for day-to-day support. Many of our elderly are left abandoned, or without the resources to look after themselves. Many of our elderly are without their most basic human right, a decent home. Imagine living for 85 years without a stable roof over your and your family’s head?
Inadequate housing provides many challenges for the elderly; increased stress, threatened health, exposure to harsh conditions and vulnerability to criminal elements are some of these. Habitat for Humanity South Africa believes that the elderly have the right to age gracefully in the stability of a decent home. Through the correct support and social infrastructure, we can give the elderly this peace, enabling them to stay self-reliant and with their families for as long as possible.
Our Elderly Housing Programme is designed to facilitate the building of decent homes for the elderly in partnership with private individuals, companies and government.
Through the programme HFHSA also offers relevant social support to beneficiaries.
- Decent houses are built for elderly in critical need
- Existing structures are upgraded and retrofitted
- Social needs and support of the elderly are provided
- Relationships between local support-organisations and the elderly within communities are built.
- Better designed housing and subsidies for the elderly is prioritised
- Housing needs of the elderly are highlighted and included in policy proposals
You can ensure that Christmas 2020 is a joyous occasion, as they celebrate it with their family in the warmth of their own home.
