Building South Africa together,
Overview of Mfuleni.
Mfuleni is located 30 kilometres outside of Cape Town and is home to over 20,000 households. Although it is marginalised from the urban centre, this vibrant community is full of creative solutions.
From 2007 to 2012, Habitat for Humanity brought together thousands of active citizens to build 488 homes in Mfuleni. This process created a grassroots movement of diverse South Africans committed to building shelter, dignity, and hope in the process.
Now we support and coach the community to address their needs in more impactful and holistic ways, as the community drive the development process forward.
”The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the
service of others.“
~ Mahatma Gandhi
Habitat for Humanity is working closely with the local leadership committee in Mfuleni to spread awareness in active governance, safety and health. In addition to leadership development programmes, we are guiding the community as they assess and address the local needs and challenges.
Community Leadership and Accountability
In partnership with Habitat, the leadership committee is driving empowering projects for the benefit of all community members. One of these projects was a “Community Clean Up” campaign on Nelson Mandela International Day 2016. Over 90 neighbours came together to revitalize the Bardale Community Hall that had been damaged during protest action. After a few short hours the hall was cleaned and repaired. For the community, Mandela Day was a special day of unity and community-building as neighbours came together to bring positive change.
While we walk alongside the community in their development journey, Habitat will also host Team Build Events. As our stakeholder partner – VHP Holdings oversees the construction of the homes, Habitat will host inspiring volunteer opportunities. Team Build Events offer the unique opportunity for active citizens from different communities to come together to help build inclusive, supportive living spaces.
This is what we strive for at Habitat: providing a hand up, not a hand out. By developing leaders, sharing knowledge, and building strong partnerships, the community can drive its own solutions.
