“Sometimes it falls on generation to be  great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

Together, we are that generation.

Habitat for Humanity has been improving people’s lives all over the world since 1976. We’ve helped over 5 million people.

Here in South Africa, we’ve hosted over 18,000 inspired volunteers since 1996. People tend to think we’re all about building houses. But it’s about so much more than that.

For us, it’s a holistic process. We work with the community. We work with families. We work with the government and private citizens and corporations. And through our people centred approach we help communities address, improve and self-manage their development to sustain their economic futures. We’re also respected advocates in housing and community development policy.

We’re playing our part. We’re changing South Africa. And we’re so excited to welcome you.

Together, we ARE that great generation.  Join us today.

“It is in your hands to make a better world for all who live in it.”

~ Nelson Mandela, at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, 30 June 2009

This is Mavis and her six children. Mavis moved in with her brother, Mzameni Filimone Madukwe in 2010 when his wife passed away to help him look after his four children. The family of 12 share space in an extended shack on the stand.

Next week, Mzameni and his family will join hands with @Mokoena Project, St David's Marist Inanda, Uber, Deloitte SA and Habitat for Humanity South Africa to build a decent home.

"I’m overjoyed with the gift of a brick house. I [Mzameni] will be at work during the event week and won’t able to be with the volunteers when the house is built, however, that has not dented my excitement of the fact that finally we will be moving into a properly built brick house.

Next week, Nosipho Poni and her family will join hands with @Mokoena Project, St David's Marist Inanda, Uber, Deloitte SA and Habitat for Humanity South Africa to build a decent home.

"I’m so excited and it stills feels like a dream - the fact that I will be moving into a brick house with my four children after waiting to have a place of my own since 2008. I currently live in a shack that can barely accommodate two people. I’m very happy at the possibility of moving into a brick house of my own with proper doors, windows and no leaking roof in rainy days as is currently the case with my shack."

Jacob and Lydia Mtolo's love story began in 1987. They have been happily married for 27 years. Next week, they will join hands with @Mokoena Project, St David's Marist Inanda, Uber, Deloitte SA and Habitat for Humanity South Africa to build a decent home.

Jacob shared his story of hardship while staying in Hospital Hills, Lenasia South; of forced evictions and having to fetch water from the mountain top, far from the settlement when it rained. Eventually, a strong and committed leadership were able to formalize the settlement. The Mtolos saved a portion of their earnings and they were able to incrementally build a brick and mortar structure that they will now be able to earn an income from.

Jacob and Lydia are very happy that at last they will receive a properly built home. #homeiswheretheheartis
