365 Ubuntu Climbs – Andrew Patterson

On 11 September, Andrew Patterson (365Ubuntu Climbs) returned to Wallacedene, Cape Town, to visit Masande in her family’s ‘new’ home that was built in February this year by Dave Kovac’s US Global Village team. It was a happy morning with 7 of us taking over the cool lounge.

Andrew posted this online about the experience:

This is my motivation.

Masande invited us back to have coffee and cake in her new home. Hearing how her families first winter with no stress about rain was humbling, and at the same time heartbreaking that we have a 4 million backlog of homes to be built. Why supporting @hfhsouthafrica is part of my life now. Why I’m able to climb in the mist atrocious weather; because together – we can and are making a difference. Thank you for those who have already supported. Was truly special to have my mom and Dad with too yesterday. Blessed beyond belief. “

Orphan and Vulnerable Child-headed (OVC) Household Upgrades

Together with People’s Environmental Planning (PEP) and Baphumelele Children’s Home, Habitat SA are currently upgrading two of the nine informal Orphan-headed (OVC) household structures in Khayelitsha that have been sponsored by the incredible support received by 365Ubuntu Climbs.

OVC Profile – Baxolise Skenjana, Khayelitsha

Baxolise Skenjana lives with his two siblings in a four-room, 5m x 5.75m informal home. That’s 25sqm…

Baxolise is 24 years old and originally comes from the Eastern Cape. He came to Cape Town to stay with his parents since they were working here. Tragically, Baxolise’s father passed away due to a car accident and their mother died after a short illness.

The conditions that the family are living in are in critical need of repair, as the informal structure leaks during the Cape Town rains and heats to boiling levels during the summer season. There is little security on the door, leaving the young family exposed and vulnerable.

Thanks to the support the Ubuntu365 initiative has received, these shelters will receive new floor slabs, flashing, insulation and a coat of paint.

We’re looking forward to joining Andrew again on climb #285 in September!
